У 2003 році Нобелівську премію з фізіології та медицини присуджено двом дослідникам Полу Лотерберу та Пітеру Менсфілду за винахід «магнітно-резонансної томографії». Це відкриття дозволило створити двовимірні зображення структур, які не можна було візуалізувати іншими методами. Пол Лотербур, виявив можливість створювати двовимірну картину шляхом введення градієнтів у магнітному полі. Аналізуючи характеристики випромінюваних радіохвиль, він міг визначити їх походження. Пітер Менсфілд продовжив розвиток використання градієнтів у магнітному полі і показав, як сигнали можна проаналізувати математично, що дозволило розробити корисну техніку для отримання зображення. У сучасній медицині метод магнітно-резонансної томографії має величезне значення під час діагностики та вибору оптимального лікування багатьох захворювань.
